Statement of Conflict Minerals

createTime:2020-11-18 author:BHP

Conflict minerals refer to minerals such as tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring countries, whose production often involves child labour and other violations of human rights and may provide financial support for the ongoing armed conflicts in those countries.

In 2010, the U.S. Congress passed the <Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act>, and the Article 1502 of the Act requires listed companies in the United States to fully understand whether tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold used in the products become the funding sources of armed groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring countries, and make them publicly available on an annual basis. The Act aims to cut off the funding of armed groups engaged in atrocities and human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighbouring countries.

In order to ensure responsible procurement of minerals, BHP requires its suppliers to purchase minerals only from smelting plants certified as conflict-free by the Responsible Mineral Initiative (RMI). BHP also requires suppliers to extend this requirement to sub-suppliers. Through these activities, BHP provides customers with appropriate information on the sources of mineral resources used by it.
